A city's arts scene is mostly held together by people you've never heard of. The person who runs the youth theater program on a shoestring. The muralist who keeps saying yes. The volunteer who has run the box office for so long that nobody remembers who did it before.

Once a year, Yuma throws them a party.

The City of Yuma's Arts and Culture Division has announced its nominees for the 26th annual Tribute of the Muses, KYMA reported Wednesday. The awards honor individuals and organizations whose "passion, vision, and dedication have advanced the arts in Yuma."

The awards

There are four:

  • Tribute of the Muses Award, the top honor, for a distinguished member of Yuma's arts community.
  • Apollo Award
  • Helios Award
  • Odyssey Award

The last three recognize outstanding achievements across the creative community, according to the City. Winners are picked by the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission along with past Tribute of the Muses recipients.

This year's nominees

The City's Oct. 28 announcement lists:

  • Tribute of the Muses: Holly Hendrick and Samantha Aguayo.
  • Apollo: Caelin Sandoval and Henry Mak.
  • Helios: Bailey Ray, Lucy Baker, Lucy Dusek and Sheccid Ortiz.
  • Odyssey: A.C.T.S. Performance Troupe, Arizona Classical Ballet and Yuma Belly Dance.

If you want to go

  • Ceremony: Friday, Nov. 20, at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony starts at 7. Admission is free and open to the public.
  • Black-Tie Soirée and Silent Auction: 8:15 p.m. at the Yuma Art Center next door. Tickets are $25. Proceeds support arts and culture programming at the Yuma Art Center.
  • Questions: 928-373-5202 or YumaAz.gov/Tribute.

The free part is the ceremony, which is the part where the people who've been doing the work for years get their moment. That seems like the right part to make free.
