How to Read the Sources

How to Read the Sources

Everything we report about Carlos Adams traces back to something you can look at: a filing, a recording, a published story or a saved post. This page lists those sources. Each entry tells you what the source is, where to find it and what it can actually prove.

That last part is the important one. A trademark record can prove an application was filed on a certain day. It can't prove the applicant's claim about when he first sold anything. A news story can tell you what a reporter was told. It can't stand in for a birth certificate. We try to keep those differences visible, and this page is where you can check whether we did.

The labels

Each source carries one of these labels.

  • Official record. A document filed with or issued by a government office, and the copy described was checked for this coverage. It proves the record says what it says. Statements a person made inside it are still that person's statements.
  • Claim in a filing. A specific statement someone made in an official filing, like a claimed first-use date. The government recorded it. That doesn't mean the government verified it.
  • Reporting. Another outlet's account. We name the outlet and treat its story as its account. Copies, or one interview posted in two places, count as one source.
  • Archive note. An earlier reading of a record, kept in our research files. The original couldn't be re-checked for the current story. We use these carefully, and we say so when we do.
  • Official video transcript. The City's transcript of a recorded public meeting. It's a written record of what was said, but it isn't certified, and we haven't checked it word for word against the audio. Misspellings in the transcript stay as they are.
  • Company's own statement. What a business says about itself on its website or in its materials. It tells you how the business presents itself, not what a government registry shows.
  • Commercial data summary. A private website's summary of shipping or trade data, usually drawn from government records the site doesn't show in full. Useful for dates and names. It isn't the underlying customs document, and two pages on the same site can show the same shipment twice.
  • Research log. Our own record of what we searched for, where, and what couldn't be reached. It shows the limits of the search, not that something doesn't exist.
  • Saved screenshot. An image of a post or message as it appeared on screen. It shows what was displayed. It doesn't independently prove who controlled an account or when something was first posted.
  • Our analysis. A conclusion we drew by comparing records. We tell you how confident we are and why.

Campaign records (City of Yuma)

Adams for Yuma Mayor: Committee Statement of Organization
  • ID: S030
  • Label: Official record
  • Exact title: State of Arizona Committee Statement of Organization, "Adams for Yuma Mayor," Committee ID PC2026-03 (initial application)
  • Filed with: Yuma City Clerk
  • Date: Dated April 28, 2026; stamped received by the Yuma City Clerk April 28, 2026, 2:25 p.m.
  • Link: City of Yuma, published document
  • What it shows: The committee's name and ID. The candidate's name, printed as Carlos Adams. A candidate signature that appears to read Carlos G. Adams. The treasurer's name field shows a crossed-out entry with "Vanessa Adams" written beside it, and the treasurer signature appears to read Jacqueline Adams.
  • What it doesn't show: Signature readings are visual readings, not handwriting analysis. This filing says nothing about the candidate's family relationships.
  • How we checked it: A retained copy of the City-hosted PDF (2 pages) was opened and the relevant sections were inspected. Residential and contact details on the form aren't reproduced here.
  • Used in: Topic introduction; boxing-shoe business story; Part 1; Part 3.
2026 Quarter 2 Campaign Finance Report (original)
  • ID: S031
  • Label: Official record
  • Exact title: State of Arizona Committee Campaign Finance Report, Adams for Yuma Mayor, PC2026-03, 2026 Quarter 2 Report: April 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026

  • What it shows: The committee's reported totals for the period: receipts $9,600.00, disbursements $8,936.60, ending balance $663.40.
  • What it doesn't show: These are the committee's own reported figures, not an audit. This report was later amended (see S116). The two versions are separate records, and the amendment by itself says nothing about why the figures changed.
  • How we checked it: A retained copy of the 10-page City PDF was opened and the cover and certification pages were inspected.
  • Used in: Topic introduction (existence and filing date only); Part 3 (treasurer field); the campaign-finance correction.
2026 Quarter 2 Campaign Finance Report (amended)
  • ID: S116
  • Label: Official record

  • What it shows: Amended totals for the same period: receipts $9,100.00, disbursements $8,593.41, ending balance $506.59.
  • What it doesn't show: Why the figures were amended. Amending a report is a normal part of campaign-finance filing and isn't, by itself, evidence of anything improper.
  • How we checked it: A retained copy of the 9-page City PDF was opened and the cover and certification pages were inspected.
  • Used in: Topic introduction (existence and filing date only); Part 7; the campaign-finance correction.
2026 July Post-Primary Election Report

  • What it doesn't show: Anything after July 21, 2026.

  • What it doesn't show: When the business actually started. This is a newspaper reproduction, not the county's filed original.

  • What it doesn't show: Where or when AdamsFTWR INC was formed, whether it is active, who its officers or owners are, whether it owns or licenses the trademarks, or whether it succeeded Adams Boxing or Adams Footwear. The page's general boilerplate about possible sales or mergers is not evidence that any transaction happened. The full street address isn't reproduced here.

  • Used in: Boxing-shoe business story.

  • What it doesn't show: The parents' names, the store's name, sales records, or any independent record of those details. It comes from the same newsroom as S032, so it isn't independent confirmation of that interview. It doesn't say where the shoes are made.

Records involving Yuma Informed

These sources concern our publisher's own involvement. We list them so you can see what's documented about our role, not just what we say about it.

Follow-up email from Dan Bustard to Mayor Douglas Nicholls
  • ID: S293
  • Label: Correspondence (our own outgoing email).
  • Exact subject line: "Re: Research Regarding Carlos Adams, Tecate Family Connections, and Federal Court Records"
  • From / to: Yuma Informed mailbox to Douglas Nicholls
  • Date: October 6, 2026, 9:26:25 a.m. Arizona time
  • What it shows: The email says the material sent to the mayor "is only part of a much larger body of research," that "relevant identity and investigative leads" were submitted "to the FBI and the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center for review," and that "I've been careful to separate documented facts from unresolved leads and speculation."
  • What it doesn't show: That the FBI received anything, that any agency acted, or that the mayor agreed with or used the research. The subject line names topics the research looked at. It is not a finding, and this coverage reports no family, cross-border or court-record connection involving Adams.
  • How we checked it: The original exported email was parsed. Private addresses and routing data are not reproduced.
  • Used in: Topic introduction; Part 1; Part 6.
Carlos Adams Facebook post and replies, October 2026

  • Exact title: Posts and comments on the account "Carlos Adams, Next Mayor of Yuma," captured in screenshots supplied October 9, 2026

  • What it shows: The post includes the line "I won't claim to know who coordinated what without evidence" and an image of a message written by Dan Bustard. In a reply to a commenter, the account wrote: "yes, he used "we". So it's been a coordinated effort." In another reply it wrote: "he was most likely hired by a private investigator firm connected to a city official. That's my guess."
  • What it doesn't show: Original post links or independently verified account control. The captures include comments from other people, and we don't adopt their opinions as fact. The images aren't republished here because they show third parties' names and photos.
  • How we checked it: Three unaltered captures were visually reviewed.

Added for the complete series (October 16, 2026)

The sections below cover the records cited in Parts 3 through 7 and in the Tecate stories. They follow the same card format. Four labels are new:

  • Correspondence. An email or message, sent or received. It proves what was written and, when headers are intact, when. It doesn't prove the contents are true or that anyone acted on them.
  • Recorded testimony. A person's own account, recorded in an interview or published in their words. It's strong evidence of what they remember or believe. It isn't a civil record.
  • Court filing. A complaint, affidavit or indictment. It proves what was filed and what was alleged. An allegation in a court filing is not a finding, and an indictment is not a conviction.
  • Research decision. A choice we made about how to organize our own files, such as treating two records as one working identity. It isn't evidence of anything, and we list it so you can see where our assumptions came in.
