On Sunday, the clocks change all around Yuma. Not in Yuma.

All summer, Yuma has quietly been on the same time as California. At 2 a.m. Sunday, California and Baja California fall back an hour. Arizona and Sonora don't. That dentist appointment in Algodones or that shift in El Centro just moved.

Arizonans get to be a little smug twice a year. Everybody else fumbles with the microwave clock, and we don't.

But living in Yuma, a few miles from two other states' worth of clocks, the time change still finds a way to get you.

What happens Sunday

At 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, daylight saving time ends in most of the United States. California sets its clocks back an hour. Arizona, which doesn't observe daylight saving time (the Navajo Nation is the exception), stays exactly where it is.

Mexico mostly got out of the clock-changing business in 2022. The big exception is the entire state of Baja California, which still changes its clocks on the U.S. schedule to stay in sync with California. Baja California falls back Sunday too, according to timeanddate.com. Sonora doesn't change at all, which keeps it lined up with Arizona year-round (Viveusa).

What that means around here

All summer, Yuma's clocks matched California's. Starting Sunday, they won't.

  • Yuma, San Luis, Somerton, Wellton: no change.
  • San Luis Río Colorado (Sonora): no change. Still the same time as Yuma.
  • Winterhaven, El Centro, the rest of Imperial County: one hour behind Yuma.
  • Los Algodones (part of Mexicali, Baja California): one hour behind Yuma.

So a 10 a.m. appointment in Algodones is 11 a.m. on your Yuma clock. A 7 a.m. shift in El Centro starts at 8 a.m. Yuma time. If you've got a standing reservation, delivery window, court date or tee time on the California side, it's worth doing that math once now instead of in a panic later.

Watch your phone

Phones set their time automatically from the network, and near a state line or the border, a phone can grab a tower on the other side. That can leave your phone showing California time while you're standing in Arizona. If your phone's clock looks wrong this winter, check that it's set to the right time zone (Arizona, or "Phoenix") instead of setting the time by hand.

Until March

This lasts until Sunday, March 14, 2027, when California and Baja California spring forward and we're back in sync. Until then, Yuma is an hour ahead of its neighbors to the west.

Enjoy not changing the oven clock.
