Wellton’s chargers bring the federal EV network to I-8
Wellton’s Chevron site is one of three Arizona locations now open through the federal NEVI program. The public figures tell a quieter story too: each station has different equipment, and the federal cost share is not the same as a blank check.

Driving Interstate 8 west of Yuma, the charging network used to be more promise than pavement. That changed in Wellton, where a new station at the Chevron on Commerce Way is part of Arizona’s first three federally funded electric-vehicle charging sites now open.
The location is at 28864 Commerce Way. The Arizona Department of Transportation says the sites were funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, known as NEVI. Under the program, federal funds can cover up to 80 percent of eligible project costs; private partners supply the remaining share. That cost formula describes the program, not a final accounting for every charger.
There is also more than one charging network at this address. Tesla lists eight Supercharger stalls, with power up to 325 kilowatts. Those equipment details matter to drivers, but they do not mean every vehicle charges at the same speed. Vehicle capability, battery condition and the station’s current load all play a part.
ADOT’s earlier Phase 1 deployment plan listed a Wellton project with seven ports and a $592,000 match. That was a planned award in a program document, not proof that today’s site has exactly seven public ports or that the listed match equals the final cost. ADOT’s current announcement is the stronger evidence that the site is open.
For a rural stretch of highway, dependable charging can make the difference between a route that feels possible and one drivers avoid. Opening a site is the first step. Long-term usefulness will depend on uptime, clear pricing, compatible plugs and whether more stations fill the gaps between Yuma and the next stop.
Arizona’s NEVI map is beginning to show up in actual places. In Wellton, drivers can now see what a federal transportation program looks like when it leaves the planning document and reaches the roadside.
