Medicare Open Enrollment Starts October 15: A Yuma Guide to Coverage and Scams

Yuma County residents on Medicare can change their health and prescription coverage from October 15 through December 7, 2026. A change made during Medicare Open Enrollment takes effect January 1, 2027, as long as the plan receives the request by December 7.

That may sound like a routine window. It deserves more care than it usually gets, because a plan that fit this year can change underneath you next year. Premiums can rise. A medicine moves to a different tier. A doctor leaves the network. Enrollment season also hands impersonators a fresh excuse to ask for information they have no business having.

KYMA reported October 7 on Better Business Bureau warnings about unsolicited calls, claims of new Medicare cards, and requests for sensitive information. Those reports describe the warnings themselves. They do not establish that those particular scams reached Yuma residents.

What you can change

Original Medicare has two parts. Part A is hospital insurance. Part B is medical insurance. Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is coverage from a Medicare-approved private insurer that bundles those benefits, usually along with prescription coverage. Part D covers prescriptions, either through a separate drug plan or through most Advantage plans.

During fall enrollment, eligible beneficiaries can move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, switch Advantage plans, or join, switch, or drop a separate Part D plan. Advantage enrollment generally requires both Parts A and B and residence in the plan's service area.

You generally do not have to reenroll every year if your plan continues and you remain eligible. Read any termination or renewal notices. Dropping drug coverage without other coverage Medicare considers comparable can bring a late-enrollment penalty.

This is separate from Affordable Care Act Marketplace enrollment and separate from first signing up for Medicare. Initial and special enrollment periods follow their own rules. People already in Medicare Advantage also get a January 1 through March 31 window to change Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare and add Part D.

Medigap, the supplemental insurance for Original Medicare costs, carries different protections. Its federal six-month enrollment period generally begins once you are at least 65 and have Part B. Fall enrollment does not automatically guarantee a Medigap policy. Outside protected enrollment or guaranteed-issue situations, insurers may use medical underwriting, charge more, or decline coverage. Check your rights before leaving Advantage.

Compare the care you actually use

Read your plan's Annual Notice of Change and its Evidence of Coverage. Use Medicare Plan Finder with your Yuma County ZIP code and your current prescriptions. Compare total annual costs: premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. A low monthly premium does not settle the question.

Confirm that your doctors and hospitals participate in the specific 2027 plan. Check each medicine's dose, coverage tier, and restrictions, including prior authorization. Compare pharmacy networks and preferred-pharmacy prices. If you spend part of the year elsewhere, ask how routine care works away from home.

No single countywide premium or provider list applies to everyone. Confirm details with the plan and with your providers before switching.

What is confirmed for 2027

CMS's final 2027 benefit parameters set the standard Part D deductible at $700. Plans can have smaller deductibles, or none. The annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D medicines is $2,400; after reaching it, you pay nothing for covered Part D drugs for the rest of the year. Premiums and medicines outside Part D coverage are not included in that threshold.

The 2027 Medicare handbook also confirms that negotiated prices for 15 additional Part D drugs take effect January 1. Your savings depend on your prescriptions and your coverage. The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan can spread covered-drug payments across the year, but it does not reduce the bill.

As of October 11, Medicare's cost page still listed 2026 Part A and Part B premiums and deductibles. Announced 2027 amounts were not available there. Do not treat last year's figures as next year's costs.

A caller's pitch is not proof

The BBB warning describes callers claiming a new card is needed or offering better coverage in exchange for Medicare or Social Security numbers. Other warning signs include fake enrollment help, benefit-expiration threats, and pressure to switch immediately.

The FTC warns that impersonators also use texts, emails, and social messages. Type Medicare.gov yourself. Avoid unsolicited links, attachments, and callback numbers. Verify assistance through an independently obtained contact before sharing personal information.

Insurance marketing is not automatically fraud. Under Medicare's marketing rules, plan representatives generally cannot call unless you are a member or gave permission; the agent who helped you enroll may discuss other options. Lawful contact still does not prove the advertised benefits fit your circumstances.

Report suspected Medicare fraud to 800-633-4227 and impersonation scams through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The HHS Office of Inspector General also accepts fraud reports at 800-447-8477. Review Medicare statements for services you never received. If information was stolen, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps.

Free help for Yuma County

WACOG's October 2 enrollment notice lists 928-217-7159 for Yuma County residents seeking help. Start with that local contact.

Arizona DES identifies the Western Arizona Council of Governments as the SHIP provider for Yuma, La Paz, and Mohave counties. SHIP offers free, objective Medicare counseling, separate from agents and brokers who may receive commissions.

WACOG counselors are available by appointment at 800-782-1886. DES also lists 928-377-4964. The Arizona SHIP hotline is 800-432-4040, and its website provides Spanish information and an intake form.

When booking, ask about Spanish counseling and whether your appointment is by telephone, in person, or online. Current Yuma arrangements and local fall enrollment-event dates were not confirmed in the reviewed public information.

Ask about Medicare Savings Programs, which can pay Medicare premiums and, depending on the program, other costs. Arizona's published 2026 QI-1 upper income limits after allowed deductions are $1,796 monthly for one person and $2,435 for a couple; other programs have different limits.

Part D Extra Help assists with prescription costs. Published 2026 annual income and resource limits are $23,940 and $18,090 for an individual, and $32,460 and $36,100 for a married couple, with exceptions and automatic qualification through certain benefits. Those are 2026 limits. A counselor can explain how the rules apply.

Before December 7

  • Read your coverage-change notices and list your doctors, medicines, and pharmacies.
  • Compare 2027 coverage and total costs using Medicare.gov or SHIP.
  • Check Medigap protections and any employer or retiree coverage before changing plans.
  • If you choose a change, make sure the plan receives your request by December 7 and keep the confirmation.

Book counseling early enough to resolve questions. You have time to compare. An unexpected caller does not get to set your deadline.
