MCAS Yuma has finished a new barracks built to house up to 321 military personnel, with two-person rooms and space to unwind after work. The next milestone is getting its residents through the doors.

The air station marked completion of its new Bachelor Enlisted Quarters with a September 25 ribbon cutting. KYMA reported October 15 that opening is expected at the end of November. That remains a reported expectation, not a firm occupancy date confirmed in the official completion announcements reviewed for this story.

For the people who will live there, the useful details are inside: two-person rooms, shared bathrooms, kitchen service areas and common spaces. The Pentagon’s housing announcement describes more closet space, updated recreation areas and expanded Wi-Fi. Those are ordinary features of a home, but they are also the point of replacing quarters that had served for more than 50 years.

The 100,756-square-foot building has 164 living rooms. NAVFAC Southwest’s completion report gives its capacity as 321 military personnel. That is the agency’s stated capacity; multiplying the room count by two would produce a different number.

The building is part of Barracks 2030, the Marine Corps’ effort to improve its unaccompanied housing. NAVFAC Southwest hired Harper Construction to build it.

Why the price shows up as both $88 million and $90 million

The figures come from different descriptions and stages of the project. NAVFAC’s February 2025 groundbreaking announcement and the Pentagon’s September completion notice both put the cost at just over $88 million. NAVFAC Southwest’s more detailed completion report calls it a $90.6 million project.

The federal award record for Harper Construction helps explain the difference. It lists an initial $88,373,433 obligation on May 9, 2024, followed by modifications bringing recorded contract obligations to about $90.6 million. The record identifies Department of the Navy award and funding offices; its financial submissions list Navy and Marine Corps military-construction funding and Marine Corps operations-and-maintenance funding.

Recorded obligations are commitments to spend, not proof of a final paid bill. The records reviewed do not establish a final, all-in project cost. The $88 million figure should not be presented as the settled final price.

A completed building and an occupied building are separate milestones

At the January 2025 groundbreaking, NAVFAC projected construction would finish in summer 2026. It also described the next step: turning the facility over to the Marine Corps to furnish and maintain.

September’s ceremony establishes that construction reached completion. It does not establish that Marines have moved in. If the late-November expectation holds, that is when the upgrade starts becoming part of everyday life for its residents.
