Goldsboro's Bakery once faced a move across Avenue A because the city bought its building for a road project. That part of its history survives in a 2008 Yuma Sun column.

Now the bakery faces another change. KAWC reported on October 15 that Goldsboro's was scheduled to close for the final time on Saturday, October 17, as its owner heads into retirement.

Buddy's bakery

The name on the sign belonged to George S. Goldsboro, known as Buddy. According to his obituary in the Yuma Sun, he came to Yuma from Pennsylvania at 18. The obituary says he opened Goldsboro Bakery in 1978 and continued baking until retiring the year before his death in October 2014, at 77.

The bakery's WeddingWire business profile gives the same founding year. That puts its beginnings nearly five decades before the announced closing.

Across Avenue A

In December 2008, a Yuma Sun business column reported that plans had been submitted for a new Goldsboro Bakery building at 2345 S. Avenue A, across the street from where the bakery stood at the time. The reason, according to Alan Kircher, then the city's assistant building official, was that the City of Yuma had bought the old building for roadway improvements.

Plans aren't a grand opening. The column records the proposed move, but it doesn't say when the new place started serving customers.

Yuma's pick

The bakery's business description lists cakes, pastries, doughnuts, cookies and breads, plus breakfast and lunch.

In December 2023, The Copper Courier included Goldsboro in its roundup of readers' favorite Arizona bakeries, choosing it for the Yuma category. Its write-up recommended the bakery for party cakes, pies and cookie trays.

That reputation came up again in KAWC's October 15 reporting. Theresa Jackson was picking up a cake for her granddaughter's first birthday. "It's always been a staple in Yuma," Jackson told KAWC.

Another retirement

Buddy Goldsboro's retirement didn't end the bakery. More than a decade later, customers were still walking in for birthday cakes.

KAWC's report doesn't name the owner who is retiring now. Yuma Informed has not independently confirmed that person's identity, the final closing time, whether the announced closing will happen as scheduled, or whether services such as special orders will continue.

The bakery's history reaches beyond its founder. Who carried it on, and what happens next, are the parts of the story we still need to hear.
