Cibola High School remains closed Wednesday, Oct. 14, after an air-conditioning failure forced students into virtual classes for a second day. The school says all students are attending from home through Canvas while repairs continue.

The school's public notice says it will announce Thursday's operating status by 5 p.m. Wednesday. As of the notice reviewed, the school had not announced whether students would return to campus Oct. 15.

KYMA reported that the system failed unexpectedly, prompting Tuesday's closure. The school has not identified the failed equipment, provided a repair cost or given a completion time. For families, the immediate question is whether Thursday will bring another day of online instruction.

Another closure, but no established connection

The October problem follows an earlier interruption this school year. KYMA reported Aug. 4 that cooling problems affected both Cibola and Kofa high schools. At the time, the district said Cibola's repairs were complete and the campus would reopen the following morning.

That history does not establish that the same equipment failed twice. The available notices describe separate interruptions, without identifying a common cause.

There is also an older repair record. In June 2020, the Arizona School Facilities Board ratified a $4,389 building-renewal award for a chilled-water pump in Cibola's Building 1008. That was funding for a specific repair more than six years ago. It is not a price estimate for the current work or evidence that the same pump is involved.

Families planning for Thursday should check the school's next notice. Until it is issued, a reopening date and repair completion time remain unconfirmed.
